Wow it has been awhile since the last time I have done a blog. But this week what I have learned in AP Lit is I feel as if I am really growing as a writer. After doing all of our little papers whether it was the creative writing portfolio, or the what is literature papers we had to do on one of our elements, I think I have truly upgraded on my writing. Mostly when I was working on my creative writing piece and after it was graded, I was a little apprehensive about it, but after seeing the comments, I surprised myself that it was actually really well. Another thing that has happened this week is picking out a poem of the week essay we have done and completing and editing it to turn in. For that writing piece its taking me a long time to correct it and to add onto it because, I just don't really know what else to write and the things I talk about, it just sounds like I'm repeating myself over and over again. But if I just stop putting it off to the side I feel as if I will get it done sooner and to also keep working on it as hard as I can.
This week has been some what confusing for me in the class. This entire week we as a class have been working on our "What Is Literature" projects. For my group, we've chosen Fantasy and Point of View for our two elements. For me, it was hard to comprehend what was going on only because I find this subject difficult and I've never worked on this type subject either.
At the end of every six weeks per trimester, I find that its the most stressful time from all the other weeks in between. The due dates. the amount of work load just piling up by the minute but actually you wait till last minute to do everything, and making sure you ace every single assignment can be a little over whelming. But its okay because I know I can get it done, just have to put the time in and focus. So for this week, the main focus was that we mostly worked on our creative writing pieces and what is literature projects. It was pretty much what we have learned in the past couple of weeks. But this week there was another poem of the week. I feel as if I should've really looked into more because I don't have a good grasp on the concept of the poem but I just hope I do good on the essay. Another thing that I learned this week was on Tuesday because we had an author named James Jackson to come and talk to us about his writing and what to write about when it comes to creative writing. One of the things I thought was interesting is he explained that it wouldn’t exactly be wise to give to ask one of your friends to read a copy of your work because most of the time they would be nice and tell you your story is super good but in reality there could be some work done to it.
The things I learned this week is when we had to do our creative writings, I feel as if that this was our main focus of this week. We had to revise and edit a prompt we wrote about and the one chose was the one applying to colleges. For me when I had to correct things on there, I learned I make a lot of spelling errors because I always type at a fast pace, or try to at least. But creative writing wasn't the only thing, we also had to work on our 'What is Literature projects' with our groups. The two Elements of Fiction we decided to chose was Fantasy and Point Of View. The reason we as a group decided to pick these two is because we thought personally for each of us can relate to them in our own way and also it just sounded very interesting to study into it. But the most important thing w need to work on is coming up with our guided question and that is just something we are all struggling with. Although we will probably come up with something when next week comes and just read more about the elements.
When it comes to poems, I've never really liked to read them. They were too short for me and I never really looked into them because they didn't sound interesting. But after the last few weeks when we had to use the TP-CASTT system it gave me a better understanding of poems and how we can read them differently. It also helped me become aware of the the poetic elements such as the language, structure, imagery and many more. When we had to type up the second essay for this poem, I felt as if I discussed a lot more than the first one because I had no idea what I had to type and when I thought I had an idea, I really didn't know what I was talking about. But for this poem, my group and I had better conversations and helped each other whenever one of us didn't understand something. Since this poem is quite longer than the other one, there was more of an explanation on what was going on in the poem so that's what made me think of topics to talk about.
Okay, so we are finally in week 3 of senior year! Wow it's going by really fast, so I think anyway but this past week what I have learned is working with others in a group or sharing your ideas can increase your thinking process and open your mind up to other's ideas and their ability to think. When we had to work in groups on Tuesday and Wednesday about the summer reading it was interesting to hear my group members ideas and their opinions on what they thought of the books and what we should use for our metaphor. By using a metaphor it shows the deeper meaning behind a subject or a statement, so when we had to chose one for our group it was fun because we all had great ideas and thoughts that went into our project to express how we felt about that chapter we picked. Another thing I learned this past week is literature does not work well in movies because literature is only made to be in writing and can not be molded into a movie. When there are movies based on books, I realized they’re not quite the same because the way it’s described in a book, doesn’t really show in a film.
This week I finally found out what a connotation is and it is something that is stated but has a deeper meaning to it than what is written in the text. As we were analyzing the Eagle poem, it made me think of things that I wouldn’t really think about. Such as the TP- CASTT has helped shaped the way I think about poems. Another thing that happened is I passed my SSR goal for the week by reading an extra twenty pages which I am very proud on my behalf. I also learned that it is important keep your hands moving, don't worry about spelling, and to not get logical while typing a creative writing piece. The main point of this type of writing is whatever comes into mind is to write it down and to always keep coming up with ideas no matter how big or small they are.
This week what I have learned, we as a class are going to do a lot of reading. So far its not bad but at the same time I don't want to say anything too soon. When we had to choose our books we are going to read for this trimester, at first I was kind of apprehensive because I thought they were all going to read difficult big books that would be a struggle for me to understand since I already have a hard time, but so far the book I am reading is interesting and I'm farther in the book then I expected to be. Another thing I learned this week was it is very important to know your own reading rate. Because of this, it encouraged me to read more and to challenge myself on what I can handle. Especially in this class, I want to become a better reader and to benefit myself in the future. Also what I have learned, it is good to keep in mind when reading, it helps your performance in writing and critical thinking as well. Finally when it comes to reading, it important to read what you will enjoy or find interesting and if you don't then it would be exhausting trying to finish a book because you find it boring.
